I or the previous owner of outboard crossthreaded the drain plug. I tried to tap the threads with the same size tap ast the drain plug and it made it worse. The drain plug is 3/8 inch, What would be the next to bigger size to re-tap and get a bigger drain plug and Where to get it.
It is the drain plug for the lower gear oil, and it is a 25hp. I looked everywhere on the internet for a 7/16 drain plug, but no one list the drain plug by the plug size. Any help appriciated.
It's the head of the screw that does the sealing, you may have to have one made. Another thought would be to measure a 7/16 cap screw, as to head size.
Most gearcase drainplugs are in a recessed, machined cavity.I think trying to go oversized to 7/16 is a mistake. The cavity isn't big enough.
I'd look into Heli-Coil - ing it to the original 3/8 size.Even that is risky,as the hole has to be drilled oversized to accept the Heli-coil threads. The drainplug head/gasket surface may be marginal.
But a new 1992 25 HP housing (bare) is over $900.00. So think carefully before chucking up your drill.
We have one nearby and the owner worked there untill the day he died a few weeks ago - - at age 86. His son now runs the place. For those in Miami the place is called Mitchel's and is near the Falls..
