Re: rectifier

In most cases you have only one. Either a rectfier or a regulator. They get fried by running the motor with the battery disconnected or loose or broken wires. If you have to replace your regulator or rectifier, check your wiring connections to be sure they are clean and tight. Look for broken wires or cracked insulation. Especially the battery cables and the red wire that goes from the regulator/rectifier to the starter solenoid. Also your wiring harnesses.

Re: rectifier

Charging systems in outboards are not forgiving at all.
An un-fused short to the battery, cross wire to battery terminals, or the dreaded battery disconnect while running, are key accidents that fry rectifiers.

For some reason, Mercury and others never included circuitry protection in their designs. This is probably due to lack of space issue.

Re: rectifier

Hey Rick.

While on the subject.......
Do you switch to OFF before charging batteries?
This is a habit I got into after paying $300 for a Rectifer and hours or rework last year.
I was always curious if a bad battery charger (smart or trickle) would feedback into the rectifier?

Re: rectifier

Yes, I charge my batteries in off. Not because I thought of it but because my batteries are always off when I'm not in the boat.
