I have a 1968 Johnson 9.5 motor MQ-14E. I am having trouble with it jumping out of forward and reverse while running in the water. It seems to run good in the barrel.
what can this possiblly be??
Thanks,
HarryO

Re: Motor shifts out of forward and reverse

Is it actually jumping out of gear or is it just slipping? Jumping out of gear is harsh and the shift lever moves. Slipping is smooth and related to speed, like spinning your wheels on an icy road.

Jumping out of gear is caused by worn out clutch dog and gears in the lower unit. Slipping is caused by the rubber hub in the propeller is shot.
