Re: 1979 55hp johnson shift problems

If the engine idles both in neutral and in gear, it's unlikely that a metal to metal problem exists... it could but it's unlikely.

Is that noise you hear a actual sound like metal jaming up against something, such as a connecting rod hitting the inner portion of the crankcase, or is more like a coughing or spitting back of a carburetor, sounding like a mild backfire?

If a coughing or spitting back scenario exists, that could indicate that the carburetors are fouled, in which case, remove, clean, and rebuild them.

Re: 1979 55hp johnson shift problems

Thank you for the response. When I have it in neutral It sounds real good and very little smoke and as I increase the rpms still runs very well. Also starts real nice and idles well. but as I put it in gear it will run well at idle but as I increase throttle flywheel comes to a instant stop no grinding or sputtering. If i try to turn the flywheel it feels like there is too much tension for the engine to turn and it kills. if I turn it backwards a few times it seems to relieve the tension and the motor will start and run fine again. thanks again
