'69 Evinrude 33HP: Best it's ran so far (video)

I did the decarb process today during lunch. I sprayed it into the cylinders and let it sit until I got home which was about 4 hours. It smoked a good bit but not nearly as bad as I've seen it describe. Maybe is wasn't as bad as some engines. It does seem to idle and run better now.

Notice too the "throttle lever" backing off as it runs. I think that pretty much shows what I was talking about in my other post. I think with the controls connected it would stay put.

I still have some work left to do on the carb but things have came a long way from when this thing was backed into the woods and left for dead.

If your expert eyes/ears see anything in the video that should be addressed I'd love to hear about it.

I ran the audio and that engine is running about 900 RPM, which may be a mite high. There's no telling right now though since you really need to have it attached to a boat to set the idle properly. In gear you want it around 700-750 RPM. 900 out of gear is a good start though.

It may just be the production but the engine sounds a bit clacky. Did you do the "Joe Reeves" armature plate tightening? A loose pull start pulley will do that too. Try snubbing it by pushing on it (watch that flywheel!)

No, you'r right. It does sound clacky. I noticed it too but since I don't have a baseline of what it's supposed to sound like I didn't dwell on it too much.

I'll try to eliminate the two possibilities you mentioned. If it's not one of those I'm guessing it's pretty bad.

I don't think it's the pull starter.

I noticed that there was some play in the starter. But I can't make the sound go away by holding it.

There is some play in the armature plate. I can rock it from side to side a little. I am not able to stop the sound by holding it but the forces acting upon it may be greater than the force I'm applying.

I searched for the Joe Reeves thing but came up empty. If someone can link it that would be great. Also any information about how much play the armature plate should have (if any) would be very helpful.

Found Joe Reeves article. Also read how he checks for slop in the pistons/crank. I'll check that too. Getting kinda worried this clacking is serious...

Update:

Well I finally got the flywheel of today so I could fix the no spark problem. Man what a PITA. Anyway, here's a video of it running with the "new" powerhead. I forgot to put the cover on which would have made for a better comparison of the first video, sorry.
