Engine or cable issue?? 1972-74 Super 65 Evinrude OB
I finally got the motor on the bayliner I purchased running and working fine, but then the engine stalled at low engine speed during gear shift (repeatedly), and when I got it going again the boat would barely make a wake it was going so slow. What would make this sudden drop in speed from 35mph-5mph??? I'm open to all suggestions......

Extra note,
The idle-up works fine and when in neutral the motor revs and idles just fine, but when the forward or reverse gearsare ingaged their seems to be a serious bogging down, not as noticabale in reverse...

remove the engine cover. with the motor not running, bet a friend to work the control and watch the movement of the engine connections. then disconnect the cable and manually move the engine connections.

They made the 3 cylinder 65hp in 1972 with the hydroelectric shift and in 73 with the hydromechanical shift.
Check for fuel problems, plugged filters, hoses, primer bulb, bad fuel pump, dirty carbs(3 of them), leaky o-rings in fuel line connectors. It doesn't take much fuel to rev an engine with no load on it. In reverse the prop is turning in a water/exhaust gas area, therefore it still is not loaded heavily.

That description (revs up in neutral, but no power in gear) is heard often in the shop. It almost always is the result of not running on all cylinders. Can be a carb (no fuel on that cylinder) or ignition (no spark on that cylinder) or engine damage (no compression on that cylinder). Can also be as simple as bad spark plug (s).
