i figured don or rodbolt could help me out on this one. i am currently thinkin on switching shops. right now all i work on is gas inboards. i have alot of nonmarine diesel expierence. is there any books publised by volvo and the other manufacturers on extensive engine theory on new style electronic marine setups? this shop is willing to send me to school as well. but i figured that reading some good books would greatly help my knowledge?

Re: marine diesel books

To be honest with you, I don't think there is such a book.
Basically, a diesel is a diesel. there are differences but a diesel is a diesel.
Now, where the new stuff comes in is all Company specific. If you learn Mercruiser electronic diesel, it won't help a bit with the Volvo EDC, or the Yanmar, or the ________ (Fill in the blank) diesel. Between the engine and drive combination, at this point in time I can't see anything beating the D4 or D6 engines with the DPH drives in the 24' to 30' or so boats. Even with the inboards, the D4, 6, 9, all great systems and all use the same technology. The trick is, they can do I/O's and inboards, along with the IPS system. Volvo is basically the leader in the marine tech right now for the 20' to 60' people that want fast, clean (NO smoke) quiet, echonomical power
The problem is, is that it is Volvo specific. Lots of tech schools, and training. Nothing like engines and drives were only 4 years ago.

Check out the Volvo site below. Especially the IPS and Joystick sections.

Re: marine diesel books

thats what this guy works on on most. all volvo specific mostly. i was wondering more about that joystick and ive already torn into an ips!! those are awesome. this guy is a specialist in volvo for pleasure boating after 30 foot. he is willing to send me to school for volvo. i was just wondering if there were any electonic diesel repair manuals available from volvo or any of the other ones more so yanmar and volvo though. that volvo site is great. what an engine.. 750 horse power @ under 2k rpm! id like to see the girth of that baby! eventully id like to move into the commercial field. i am only 26 right now and i think im on my way to becomming a well rounded mechanic. i am learning as much as possible from all the old salts i am around. and its great when they enjoy explaining everything. and why they do it that way.i learned more from my first year of doin service and maintnence rounds than the past few actully working on em. and my friends always laughed at me for staying home from the bar and spending my money on tools!! who knows maybe this is my golden chance to make that barge of mine repowered with a rebuilt volvo package!!! and get away from the omc!! but thats why i joined this forum. to learn mostly! its been great. i have used several of dons bulletins

I assume you mean the guy is a Volvo dealer, not just that he works on them. Otherwise, he won't be able to send you to Volvo school, that's only for dealers.
Volvo usually sends all the manuals to their dealers automatically when they come out, there are seperate manuals for each engine, the electronics drives, transmissions, etc.
Also check with that dealer, he is probably setup with the Volvo partner network where you can do online product training. They are planning on setting up some type of service training in the near future, but not sure what will be involved.
