This is a great site and I have learned much and spent hours here reading recently.
I am trying to disassemble and remove the powerhead on my Evinrude 1984 235hp and need major help. I have worked on helicopters and can turn a wrench, but I have never worked on an outboard and my service manual has not arrived yet. My questions are:
Do i need to remove the fly wheel and disconnect the LU before the powerhead can be removed??
And I have removed three bolts on each side and three nuts in the back but the thing won't budge. What am I missing??
I can't afford to take it to a shop so any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.
Welcome to i boats ......Iive learned more than i can remember on this site...i would think that u dont have to remove the flywheel to pull the powerhead........ As for the LU yes u should remove that before tryin to lift the powerhead off as sometimes the drive shaft splines can be seized....... enough to hold the poweread from bein released .......check again and make sure u have unbolted all the lower powerhead bolts...then the fun begins ....pryin,,, liftin more pryin maybe some lub ...im sure u will get it off with the help of everyone here ...good luck.... let us know how how it goes .
Disconnect the lower unit first. The shift rod is still connected to the block under the bottom carb. You will need to put a new impeller in there anyway-so take it off now. The flywheel stays on-the three holes drilled and tapped in it's top are to accept the bolts from a wheel puller. Lift the engine block with that wheel puller. There are a total of 5 small bolts that have 1/2 nuts. You got the three in the back by the exhaust. There are two more in the front of the block, accessed under the lower cowling, by the swivel bracket. And of course, the 6 long bolts thru the midsection. At that point, should come right off. I always strip the engine prior to final removal, starter, heads, fuel system and intake-just to reduce weight.
