Default mariner identification ?

Hi Guys , i've just recently bought my first power boat and it's playing up ! i think it's crap in the carbs ? can anyone tell what year this motor is ? it's a mariner 40 hp serial # 40 E 6E9 L 406587 Made in japan ! i've tried to find out myself but it's too confusing and i couldn't find a match ! also is there anywhere or anyone where i can get a free pdf manual or something or is that a no no around here ?

I think it is a 1982 model but I must admit that the numbers are a bit confusing.

Has it got oil injection? Is it a 3 or 4 cyl?

hi mate , i'm an aussie too ! i'm in casino nsw ! i don't think it's oil injected , i put the oil in the tank with the petrol ! it's only got 2 cylinders ! sorry i should have been a bit more specific.

are u sure those are the numbers?

also look on the block

hello justintime , yes i could take a pic but i don't know how to post them on here ????? on the little tag that's riveted to the side of the big clamp part that holds onto your transom , the top line says (mariner 40E)
the next line says (6E9 L 406587)
the bottom line says (made in japan) all the other numbers that i've noticed on the block and on the base of the carbs says 6E900

1982/1985/1986 all use the same parts
i just looked it up on my mercury parts catolge
i think u can find stuff on mercury website
