1968 6hp Johnson overheating- blocked p--- hole?

I have a 'new' 68 johnson 6hp [ don't ask why I bought a motor this old; bottom line: for sentimental 'reasons' having to do with my deceased father].

It will crank but gets way too hot, way too soon. A little water sprays out of the exhaust, but the main "p*** hole" on the port side of the lower unit (about 1/2 way down on the port side of the lower unit) seems to be TOTALLY blocked by rubber of some sort.

Has a rubber nipple or O ring slipped inside the lower unit? I am totally clueless as to what is wrong or what to do.

Thanks for any suggestions/advice.

That is not a pee hole, and furthermore, it is supposed to have a chunk of rubber in it. That rubber is a water tube grommet. Your motor does not have a pee hole. The indicator is the water spraying out the exhaust relief hole in back. Should have a fairly healthy spray at all speeds, but since it is broken up by the exhaust it will never be a solid stream.

I hope you are or have replaced the water pump.

Thanks for that info. I hate the thought of having to open up the lower unit. Will keep troubleshooting...

Was hoping to avoid having to do that, but but that's probably got to happen. Any other troubleshooting suggestions? Thanks.

the rubber coming out is most likely part of the impeller.
water pumps are an easy fix

I have a 1967 6hp- great motor. When you drop the lower unit, watch the small cross pin at the top of the driveshaft that holds the lower crank seal up. The driveshaft has to be turned so the pin can fit through the opening and drop down. And be careful of the shift rod clamp. Once the lower unit is out the water pump is easy. Steve
