I just bought a 1999 Stratos fish and ski with a 1999 175 hp Ficht Evinrude. Boat and motor are in like new condition. I didn't know anything about the history of Fichts until I bought this boat and started reading up on the engines.
From what I have read, I believe the key to protecting the motor is not to run at slow speeds under a load as this builds extra soot that will absorb the oil and rob the lubrication. Also, use Evinrude RAM oil.
I had the motor decarbonized and the plugs changed and indexed.
I plan to install a hydro-fin stablizer to help with the hole shot and reduce slow speed operation under load.
I have three questions:
1) will running extra oil mixed in the gasoline help lubrication or increase soot production?
2) will running at idle speeds (like trolling) be bad for these Ficht engines, or is the extra soot production only under load?
3) does anyone have any other suggestions on how to take care of Ficht engines to get a long life out of them?
I would inquire with the Bombardier Customer Service hotline. Ask for someone in Tech Service to help you. Ask if there have been any service mods completed on the engine. Have your serial number handy. One of the last ones issued by OMC prior to bankruptcy was a major mod. Included a software update, a new fuel pump, some brackets for the injectors and a couple of other items. The mod (parts only) is rather expensive (perhaps in the $500 range), but is should be available and should be done on the engine. If your engine is up to date on mods, there should be no restrictions on running the engine. Run the Bombardier XD50 oil in the engine.

THANKS! I will definitely follow your advice and try to get in touch with the tech service group at Bombardier. (I assume that I can get their numbers by searching the internet). Is the XD50 oil a low soot oil? Is it the same thing as the Evinrude RAM oil?
The engine would definitely be worth $500 in up to date modifications, if that means good long service.
THANKS AGAIN
