its a 80s mariner 25hp, i searched the forums but couldnt find anything on how to remove that big screw in type carrier bearing. searched the web also on special tools but the ones i saw in the pictures doesnt seem like it would open that. i have the original lower unit and another one of a mercury, original one was damaged (hit a rock) i had to really cut the casing off with a angle grinder (cutting bit) then with a flat head screw driver and hammer was able to remove the carrier bearing and all the gears etc. in it. Purpose was to swap the original drive shaft and shift shaft to the mercury casing. Now I dont want to do any damage to the mercury casing, so looking for that tool!! Help please..
Re: 80s mariner 25hp - to remove carrier bearing? swap mariner -> mercury ca
I think that tool has been discontinued by mercury. However, there are a few aftermarket versions. They are around $75.00
Don't even try a screwdriver. Depending on how long the spanner nut has been on there, it will probably require heating the casing outside the nut to loosen it.
I would suggest taking it to your local marine shop and have them loosen it for you. It would probably be cheaper in the long run. I say this because after you loosen the nut, you are going to need the special slide hammer attachment to pull the bearing carrier, thrust washer, and reverse gear off of the prop shaft. That thing is about $250.00. If it is not too tight, a typical slide hammer with reversable hooks will work, but you would be better off taking it in to the shop because they can loosen the nut and pull the bearings and gear off of the shaft in about 15 minutes. Unless you are having them overhaul the LU, most shops will do this for far less than the cost of the tools. Also, if you are removing the shift shaft, there is a special tool requred to remove the shift shaft bushing. $13.00
BTW, I have also seen that spanner nut tool on ebay for around $30.00.
Re: 80s mariner 25hp - to remove carrier bearing? swap mariner -> mercury ca
the mariner 25hp lower unit that i broke open, does not need any sort of puller, the carrier itself is just a screw in type, not like the ones you see in the 65hp or 40hp models..
Also the shift shaft is not the same type as like other ones, it does not have a shift shaft busing where you require a special tool. I know which tool you are talking about.. length of the shift shaft on the 25hp is roughtly the same as the drive shaft, if you pull on it, it comes out of the casing.
i couldnt find that particular tool to remove this carrier on the internet, maybe im not looking right at the pictures.. if its not to expensive i like to buy.. if not, im going to have to bring it in to a marine shop to have them open it.
but there must be a tool to open that!!
