Default another qusestion about Mercury water pump

I have a 87 mercury 50 HP classic fifty on my 87 basstracker. I just bought it last month and i could not get water to pump out the, I believe you call it a tell-tale pipe. I removed the lower unit and took the cover off the water pump and replaced the impeller and the two gaskets with the metal one in between. I fallowed the manual on how to do it. before we put the lower unit back together i tried blowing low PSI of air through pipe that takes the water to the top end, and it sounds like it is leaking at the top where it connects to the top end. Is there supposed to be a grommet or something on the end of the water pipe where it slides into the pump, cause the kit i got from the local parts guy didn't have one. I also tried blowing and sucking air with my mouth through the tell-tale tip, on the side of the engine and it seems plugged tight, is it supposed to be like that. we put the lower unit back together and hooked up the muffs to it and ran it. still no water out of the tell-tale, just a drip. the water blows out the propeller.
Can you please help me solve this problem. I don't want to take it to shop just fiend out it was something simple but costly.

If the tell tale was not "plugged" up by you when not in use, dirt wasps might have done it for you......I opened mine up with small guage wire....Had to dig dirt out of the pee hole 2 inches before I had flow...Try this.....Take your wire and run it up in the hole pushing in and spinning it like a drill going right and left. When you or if you get dirt to come out, with water flow on with your hose, fire motor up and check pee.......If a dribble, do againg while running........Do not let it run to long, 30 seconds at a time.....Do this a few times until your peeing good.......It took me 3-4 times without motor running, then 3-4 times while running with motor running and water hose on.......Still gonna replace impeller since motor hasn't ran in 5 years.....

Thanks TUCK 72 for the info.
I went to work on it again this morning and noticed there was a small drip of water working out of the tell-tale pee hole. I took the rubber hose off where it conects to the engine and it has a small amount of sandy like dirt in it. I cleaned it out and tried blowing in it but it still seams plugged. If i bow in it will it let the air pass through or its it supposed to be blocking the air? One more thing should i take the cover off to see if the water jackets are plugged?
Thanks again for helping me out.

I keep a 12 inch length of string trimmer string stuck up my telltale when the motor is not in use, so the dirt dobbers can't get in there.
