67, 68 3.9 mercury am I missing a part on carb or ?
I have takin small gas engine repair 4 years in high school but haven't worked on a boat engine before. I just traded a 22 mag pistol for this engine and I plan on fixing this and I don't know nothing about it so I thought I would ask. With the cover off and where the gas line hooks up inside there is nothing over the gas line inlet is that the way it suppose to be. I'll see if this picture thing works. I'll try to post a picture.

It is a spot for a rubber grommet to seat. The upper cowl houses the recoil for the starter, and needs to be tight against the lower cowl. The rubber grommet that is mounted in the upper cowl allows the fit to be be tight, yet flexible.

Thanks AMD For posting my picture. Looking straight down it's where the big hole is, than a smaller hole sits in it, thats where the gas line hooks up right or am I wrong.

I thought it was missing a part the way the butterfly works on carb , Well anyways I took the sparkplug out and there was a small hole on piston not all the way threw it, should I put new piston and rings in or what ?

They're known to be an exceptionally reliable motor. Unfortunately you have a motor built many, many years ago. You need to evaluate the condition of the entire motor, including the lower unit to see if it would be worth the time/money to fix it. Parts are increasingly difficult to get for it. You might be better off looking for a donor motor.
