Default Evinrude 6hp Fisherman 1970 Cooling system questions

Is this motor supposed to have a pee hole?

What temp should the thermostat open?

When started in the tank water starts spraying from the ~1/2in hole a few inches above the cavitation plate after about 15 seconds of running. Over the next 30 or so seconds the spray gets stronger. This is not a steady stream but a spray of droplets combined with exhaust? gas. The heads warm up until I can hold my hand on them maybe 3 or 4 seconds.

The thermostat, when removed and tested in a pan of water with a meat thermometer starts to open at 140 and is fully open at 160F.

Is this correct behaviour? The motor runs really well since I rebuilt the fuel pump. I would not want to fry it and I have no confidence that it was maintained correctly before I bought it.

My manual was on the way until ebay suspended the seller before we could finish the transaction. :^ I will try again.

The thermostat is opening properly. My 65 does not have a pee hole and it's does have water out of the exhaust holes like your's does. I can hold my hand on the head for longer than that though. I would check to make sure the passageways going for the impeller through the block are all clear. If it's been awhile change the impeller.

Classic discription of hand on head is "too hot to hold your hand on but not so hot it burns you".
Carefully check while running under load.
If you don't know the age of the impeller or suspect it could be old you should replace it.Cheap insurance for a healthy motor.

I bought the motor a few weeks ago and several things that the seller told me turned out not to be so. Like about how well it ran. In fact, it did run well if you kept squeezing the bulb.

If I had paid much for it, I might be annoyed. On the other hand, I am enjoying the process of getting it right.

My testing tank is a 5 gallon bucket. Possibly I don't have enough of the shaft covered. If the weekend looks nice, I may take it out and see if running it on the boat makes a difference. I may put in a water pump kit just on GP.

You can't expect it to work properly in a 5 gallon bucket. Get it in the water.

My thought was that if the intakes were well covered (they were) it would work. This is why I love the internet, information like this tends not to get into manuals and articles.

Thanks, I'll either take it to the lake or get a bigger tank.

I'd do the water pump anyway. I have a 70's version of that motor, and the impeller hadn't been changed in years. It seemed to pump OK, but pumped noticibly more with a new impeller in it. The rubber takes a set after years and doesn't pump as well. FYI, these motors are a bit funny in that there is a roll pin near the top end of the driveshaft (is perpendicular to the shaft). When you go to drop the lower unit, it'll go down 1/2 inch and then get caught on that pin. In order to drop the lower unit completely off, you need to turn either the driveshaft (turn prop with it in gear) or the flywheel so that the roll pin lines up with a slot up at the bottom of the motor (which you can't see). Just keep turning and jiggling the lower unit slowly until it lines up and drops.

There is no tell-tale... the sputtering of water out that back hole is how it's suppossed to be.

good luck..

I have a 63 5.5hp Fisherman. Runs great but only get warm exhaust out of the exhaust port. Motor doesn't get too hot to put hand on tho. How long does it take for the thermostat to open. I just purchased this for $25 and the motor looks brand new. Very well maintained. All new wires, plugs, fuel lines. So, I gotta believe the impeller has been changed out at some time. I ran it in a 5 gallon bucket with the inlets covered. But I'll try a bigger one too. Not running it long or at WOT throttle until I resolve this. This is a sweet little motor that's been exceptionally well maintained. BTW, I am runnning 24/1 mix.

Welcome to iboats!
Next time, please start a new thread instead of reviving a 2 year old one.
Anyway, the lower unit has to be submerged at least half way up the leg when in a barrel or trash can. A 5 gallon bucket is not enough.
If you don't know how old the impeller is, it is a good idea to change it.
