I am in the market for a 17' bowrider with 115 HP O/B for family skiing (freshwater).

For the period 1995 to 2005 are there any particular motor models/manufactures which I should stay away from?

Thanks!

Force and make sure no one hung an old Chrysler on it.

First see what outboard dealer is closest to you .... then you choose, it just makes life easyer when you have to get it serviced or whatever .....

One thing to remember, all good brands still have lemons. Also if it floats or wears a skirt its gonna cost, big time.

I understand the 2-4 115 Mercs are not good for sking. What I mean by 2-4 is motor idles on 2cyl, then kicks in all 4 cyls about 2500 rpms. Motor bogs down and then all of sudden take off.

Any thoughts about the 1998 115 HP Evenrude SPL?

A very durable engine. A little thirsty, but not anymore than other two strokes, of that vintage.

I never heard this. We own a 125 of that vintage and its smooth all the way from idle to wide open. Yes, it idles on 2 cylinders, but it's not a sudden jolt when they kick in. In fact I can't even tell when they kick in!

Since you own one, I defer to you. I had heard there were issues with these motors, never experienced it myself. Sorry

skip the electric shift omc's of yore. skip the forces and chryslers. get something either YOU can fix easily or you have strong dealer support for.

if you are going to ski and tube i would look for a looper instead of a crossflow.
loopers have more torque
