You should have two leads going to the positive side of the coil. With the ignition switch in the run position, you should have power on the purple/red (resistor wire) wire on the positive terminal of the coil. If not, it's open and needs replaced.
The reason it runs a bit when cranking is the coil is getting power from the other wire (Purple/Black) going to the coil from the starter solenoid.
