Default 1996 mariner slipping in full throttle

I have a 50hp that slipps like the prop stops turning.
When taking off with a pontoon boat, the prop turns fine but when you nail the throttle it immediately comes out of gear, (so to speak).
I have tried three known good props including a newly rebuilt prop and the all do the same thing. I tried them on another boat and they are all O.K. so it is not the props.
I removed the lower unit and checked the drive shalf, I removed the lower gears and there is no sign of wear down there.
Can the lower unit gears slip?
When watching the prop area in the water, everything looks perfict, when you mash the throttle, there is a serious immediate slip or snap out of gear and the motor will run up the RPMs but the boat slows down.
Seems like the prop is turning 2,000 rpms and the motor is turning 5,000 rpms.:'(

Where is the AV plate in relation to the keel line of the boat? Sounds like the motor isn't in the water deep enough

Is this a new problem?

Shift cable or shift linkage may be out of adjustment, and not throwing it fully into gear. It will pop out under heavy load.

The motor came with the boat in 96 so I would think the lower unit is the proper length and when I watched it as it "came out" the prop was still under water.

I will check the shift cable position today.

anything else?:$

Origional motor, unknown when the problem started but it had a new driveshalf put in and not run since. The other thing is that it shifts really hard, especially into reverse, I thought that could be from sitting three years.

I adjusted the shift linkage as suggested and it only took 4-5 turns and it made the diffrence I was looking for.
Works great.
The Admiral gets the cegar.
Thanks a lot folks I appreciate it.
