17' Boston Whaler Outrage with 2000 Evinrude 115 FICHT. This boat has a built-in 56 gallon fuel tank under the center console. Every 3 - 4 hours of engine operation, i get up to a quart of water in the fuel.
This does not happen every time I run the boat... sometimes I check and there is no water. (I check by removing the fuel line from the primer bulb, attaching a short peice of hose and pumping some fuel out to a glass jar).
I don't notice much water in the bilge. The top of the tank doesn't seem wet. The tank vent hose is angled steeply upward at the vent, and the gas cap seems tight and secure.
This has happened for 3 years so I don't think it's coming from a gas station.
Is there any way it may be getting in from the engine? Or perhaps getting in through the tank (although the tank does not leak gas!).
I'm stumped, and have not brought it to another dealer because I can't make any sense of this. (first dealer has gone out of business but had NO idea, thought I was crazy).
This is not sabotage, the boat has been stored in different places and this has happened while we were away with the boat on vacation as well.
The fuel filter on the motor filters out the water as long as I keep on top of it, but I'm afraid to put on a water strainer/filter because that would be two filters... might reduce fuel flow.
Anybody have any ideas??? Thanks in advance.
