Why did my Suzuki DT225 EFI detonate?

I have a 2003 DT225 that has always been well maintained.

During a fishing trip about 3 months ago it was running fine until about half way back to the dock when it suddenly went from full power to about half power.

Two different Suzuki mechanics have found a hole in one of the pistons.

In my mind, detonation is caused by too much timing advance or lean mix.

Why would a computer-controlled EFI engine have one of these conditions - bad computer? What else could have caused detonation?

Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

clogged injectors will pop one every time as will low rail pressure. if you replace the piston have the fuel system carefully checked. flagship marine, and others, have the facilities to flow test and clean the injectors and replace the injector filters.
would be a rare thing to see a bad computer.
