I have a 1983 90hp inline 6 cyl. It will only start if I advance the throttle while cranking. Isn't this advancing the timing which would indicate the timing actually isn't set correctly. Once stated it runs great except that it likes to foul out plugs when running slow. MAybe further indication of timing issues?

Try pumping the bulb 2 or 3 times hard and slow after it gets firm. It sure has helped me start many of the mercury inlines. Don't worry. You can't hardly flood one.

The symptoms described can be attributed to carb adjustment problems. Why not check the timing to eliminate it as an issue? It is easy to do. There is a specified idle "pick-up" timing setting as well as a specified max timing setting. if your settings are within spec, than it likely you have other issues (like the carb float level or mixture adjustment)
