When I shift into fwd the engine bucks and seems to jump in and out of gear at speeds over idle up to about 4K rpm. Reverse works OK.
Somebody mentioned a gromet in the shift linkage?

Well, if you haven't messed up the clutch dog and the forward gear you will soon. Stop running it until you get things straightened out. Take the shift cable loose at the motor and shift it into gear by hand and see if she still jumps out of gear. If she does then you need to rebuild the lower unit. If she stays in gear then put her in neutral, put the control handle in neutral and adjust the trunion on the motor end of the shift cable until the cable lines up with the linkage. Put it back together and try her.

walker's got it covered. also when shifting make it a swift shift so the gears don't grind.
