Default 85 Mariner Electric Start

Just purchased an 83 Fisher flat bottom bass boat. It came with an 85 Mariner 40 horse.

The previous owner said he was having problems with the electrict start. So, he bypassed the key and attempted to engage the starter from the battery. When he did this he heard a pop. A local boat mechanic told him that there was a fuse under the cover that probably popped. However, previous owner was unable to locate the fuse. Any ideas?

Thanks

look on the side with the power pack ( all the wires going here), look to the bottom of it, on mine there is a little loop that is black, insdie there is a fuse. Hope this is what you are talking about.

Thanks srussell28!

I'll take a look at this and maybe this will be the problem. To be honest, not sure what I'm talking about, I've never owned an outboard before. Hopefully this helps though.

I have the same year motor in a 50 HP model, if you still have a problem finding it I can take a photo of the fuse holder and it's location and Email it to you.

It's on the starboard side of the motor isn't it? If I'm not mistaken I noticed that over the weekend. Never checked the fuse. I'll have to check it this weekend. There are approximately 8 wires going into the block, and a fuse encased in a black rubber fuse holder, correct?

Thanks a million!

Does your boat with the 50horse mariner have power trim, etc??

Thats correct you got the location for the fuse. Hope that that is the source of the problem. No power trim on my 50, just got the motor on an 85 Lowe Bass Catcher Pro that I recently purchased. I would love to have a power trim unit on it. I am looking for a second hand unit that will fit but in my neck of the woods there is not alot avaliable.
