Default evinrude 200xp broken rod/piston?

I bought a 92 stratos with a broken rod/piston. If your looking at the back of the engine, it would be the bottom one on the port side. I was curios as what could be the cause and is this something that a non-mechanic can tackle with limited tools etc. What would be the hours entailed to change out the one piston and rod if possible? Would this be something that all the psitons should be done? I am new at this as far as outboard engines....this is my first one!

A big welcome your way ks - -

Do you have the OMC shop manual specific for your engine? If not get one.

Yes a driveway wrench can overhaul one of these but it is a bit more involved than changing a tire on your car. The engine needs to be removed, disassembled, taken to a marine machine shop, machine work done as needed, lotsa other parts bought/cleaned/inspected, and the thing put back together.

If you want to check it out further before taking the leap spend as much time as you can reading the posts here in this section. Thousands of questions have been asked and answered here and they are waiting for you.

Whether or not the engine is even rebuildable is a question at this point. Until you get it apart and see how much damage there is you simply don't know what you are dealing with. If a rod is broken, there could be some substantial block damage that can't be repaired. I hope you bought this boat cheap.

Thanks for the info. I took the head off and the sleeve is shot with fragments of the piston in the lower ports. The wrist pin looked melted on one end and it appeared to go past the sleeve and may have damaged the block. I am wondering should I replace the powerhead or buy a new 07' 150 horse evinrude and would that perform as well on my 20 ft stratos as the rebuilt 200.

Anytime you give up 50 horsepower, you will see a performance difference. It may be even more than 50 HP if you have the "XP" engine. It will put out up to 10% more hp than indicated on the cowl. Your engine is probably a 90 degree big displacement engine. The 150 is a 60-degree smaller bore engine, but weighs less. When you compare new vs. rebuild, you need to evaluate the $ you will spend for the performance you want in the boat. FYI, Evinrude makes both blocks in a 200 hp ETEC version.

One additional bit of advice is if you do decide to rebuild, make sure you have determined what caused the failure. Lean mixture, overheat, and lack of lubrication (failed oil pump) are all possibilities. Rebuilding the engine and not checking the supporting systems is a recipe for doing the job again.
