my buddie is rebuilding his 6-53's. i remember when i worked on equipment with the old leaky bastards, we would shim the cam gears so they would spray at a little more advanced point.(not much) but, that would give more lug power. would it be economical to do the same in a boat? i am just wondering bout the black smoke they would throw off.

the reason we did this is because that the older detroits used to blow more smoke but had more power. D D then retarded the timing to produce less emissions. but the power ratings went down. you diesel guys are probably battin yer eyes at me a? 8)
