I recently purchased a 1982 Glastron c-537 with a 470 Mercruiser and pre-Alpha outdrive. I have read all the previous threads and looking for a little more info.
Previously, I have added a new gas tank, rebuilt carb, starter solonoid, replaced the water pump seals, new hoses. Motor now starts right up and runs good on ear muffs.

Current issues:
1. While on the lake, When the engine runs for a while and gets warmed up, It does not want to turn over until it cools down for a bit.

2. wants to run hot if I idle for long periods of time like when you are helping someone trying to learn how to ski. run down the lake and the temp goes back to normal.

3. Last night I was going to check the Timing however, I do not see a timing tab. Just 3 ribbs on the water pump housing that appears to be the marks but no numbers. How do I set the timing with this?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: 82 Mercruiser 470 help

I'm afraid the link B&B posted isn't going to help much. It's for a 3.0L Chevy engine, not even close to your Mercruiser 470 3.7L engine.
You actually need book #3 of the Mercruiser manuals, part number 90-95693 for your engine.

TUNE-UP SPECS:
Dwell 28-34°
Timing at idle speed 8° BTDC
Idle Seed 650 - 700 rpm

As far as your overheat at idle, when was the last time the impeller was replaced. They should be replaced after 2 seasons on that style pump.

Thanks Admiral, this is exactly what I needed on the timing.

The outdrive impeller is new.

Admiral,
I know this is probably a dumb question but, what kind of fluid/oil should I use for the Power trim?
I see conflicting reports that 10w30 is ok. can you advise?

You need to start a new thread with all your information (year, sn's etc) instead of tagging onto another thread.
