Evinrude Tilt/Trim indication issues

Brand-new poster hoping for some help and guidance. I have a 2001 Evinrude 225 on a 1996 Grady White. earlier in the season, the trim indicator stopped moving when the motor was trimmed. I tested the trim gauge as instructed in the Clymer service manual and it worked as the manual said it should. I also sprayed some WD-40 on the sending unit. If I move the arm on the sending unit by hand, the gauge moves along with the input. The gauge seemed to work.....for one day. The next time I used the boat the gauge did not indiciate correctly. When the motor is trimming, the needle on the trim gauge moves, but as soon as the the trim button is released, the indicator drops all the way down. Sometimes, the needle will stay in one position, but it is always a much lower (bowdown) indication then it should be. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you know that the gauge is good, I would look to replacing the sender. Why did you have to spray it with WD-40?

Actually it was at the suggestion of the evinrude tech here locally. He said they sometimes bind up a little.
