[colour=blue]A semi with a low-loader, on the low-loader is an 8 ton backhoe. The shovel arm of the backhoe is extended almost vertically.

The semi is hurtling down the highway at 60mph. It is a clear and calm day and the highway is flat and straight.

Up ahead is a multi-lane vehicular overpass made of concrete with steel reinforcement.

What happens next?

A: The driver sees the overpass and realises that the backhoe won't fit, he brakes and stops safely.

B: The backhoe hits the overpass which causes it to tip off the low-loader and crash onto the highway.

C: The backhoe hits the overpass and snaps off the shovel arm.

D: The backhoe slices the overpass in half.

(You just know that pics are gunna follow!!)

Re: What happens next....................

Hey, I saw where that happened in Orlando when on vacation. It took out a 4 foot slice of the overpass, busted the hold down chains on the hoe, and tore up the hydraulic hoses on the hoe. Had traffice backed up for half the day. That type of accident can tear things up in a hurry.

So what happened in your case?

That seems almost impossible that it could slice that far through reinforced concrete! That truck must have been hauling! I would think the sudden stop didn't do the driver any good. :^

I'm more concerned/ miffed about the truck driver AND the equipment operator.

It used to be standard industry practice ....to lower the boom of all heavy equipment when not in operation. I wont even address the way it was loaded and carried down the highway in this situation.

I dont miss heavy contruction and I especailly steer clear of todays equipment operators on and off the road.

Re: What happens next....................

Sunday I was follwing an 18 wheeler on the highway. Flashing lights turned on indicating to the 18 wheeler to take an alternate route as his trailer was too tall to fit under the bridge.

He ignored and went right under. I backed way off as I thought he was going to slam into the 13 ft tall opening.

He barely fit. I guess he either knew he would fit or didnt see the flashing lights.

Dang on, that did more damage than the one I saw in Orlando. Did that happen at night by any chance?

I know around here, contractors will move their heavy machinery. Less traffic and sometimes they will get by without permits. Those are the ones that seem to always be in a big hurry.

That'd certainly be an eye-opener/high pucker factor for the person travelling on top of the bridge, to suddenly see THAT in front of you.

And how stupid do you have to be, to drive a truck around that is 20-30ft(?) tall, and head straight for an overpass! I'd take that morons CDL away immediately!
