My Merc acted up on the weekend-here's what happened. Looking for help on troubleshooting.
-Crank battery was low and attempted to start engine - would not crank fast enough to start.
-Replaced battery with trolling motor battery. Battery terminals extremely hot (burned fingers)
-engine started no problem-cranked over very fast
-ran engine for about 10 minutes (drove couple miles)
-stopped engine for about 20 minutes
-changed back to weak starter battery thinking it would have enough volts to start warm engine and then charge up
-beep when key was turned to on position and then when turned to start no action from starter and electronics went out (all electronics were out-fishfinder, stereo, etc).
-changed back to trolling motor battery
-started engine (again cranked very fast due to large trolling motor battery with full charge)
-started backing up and engine stalled (cold motor likely)
-engine would not restart. No usual beep when the key is turned to on position
-appeared to be a small bit of smoke upon trying to start-appeared to be coming from battery compartment
-bypassed aftermarket battery neutral disconnect switch thinking it was fried after overheating
-found that only after disconnecting and reconnecting the “+” cable would the electronics “reset” and the engine would start
-sometimes the motor will start without removing and reconnecting the “+” cable and sometimes it will not.
-motor runs great once started

Any help?
