Gas leak

I recently purchased an 18 hp evanrude and it seems to run fine. When I shut the motor off and tilt the motor up it leaks gas. I recently went camping and my boat used quite a bit more gas than the others due to this problem. I figure it must be either the fuel pump or the carberator, can anyone offer any suggestions as to how to proceed to fix the problem.

Re: Gas leak

Hi Mike

You may want to disconnect the fuel line if it's going to be sitting for awhile. Other than that, you may need to remove the carb and adjust the float level and possibly rebuild the carb using a new float and needle provided in the kit..Others more familiar with that motor will have more suggestions....

Re: Gas leak

You've identified the most likely suspects.

Observe the fuel pump while you pump the primer bulb...if there's a hole in the diaphram gas will come out the little hole on the back side. that's an easy rebuild order a kit from iboats.

Wouldn't hurt to inspect the fuel lines under the cowling before rebuilding the carbs.

[edit - those fuel pump comments don't apply to VRO pumps]
