I need to replace the throttle plate (a black cylindrical piece of plastic) inside the throttle control on the steering handle of my old 1988 Johnson 14 SPL outboard. What is the best way to remove the control ? I don't see any screw or clip to access in order to remove the rubber grip and the safety cutoff switch. My SELOC repair manual doesn't seem to mention the throttle control.

Thanks for any help.

Re: 1988 Johnson 14HP

The whole thing is disassembled like this. First, screw in the stop switch all the way till it just spins. (I believe this part also acts as the idle adjust.)This will disconnect it from the handle. Then, notice that the handle has 2 little recessed areas or holes in it with little plastic tabs inside the holes. These tabs are part of 2 parts inside called the helixes. Get 2 small screwdrivers and simultaneously push in on the 2 small tabs while a helper pulls the handle straight off. The 2 tabs are the only thing that are holding the handle on at this point. There are a number of small parts inside so watch out you dont lose them. You should lube the whole thing before reassembling.

Lorin,
Thanks a lot for your help ! That worked perfectly !

Now I need to take off the old throttle plate (the plastic cylinder which has the throttle position indicator painted on it) and it doesn't seem to just want to slip off. I don't see any screw or retainer which holds it on the handle, but I hesitate to try to pry it off unless that's my last resort. I also see that I may need to replace the stop switch/idle adjust assembly since some of it's plastic seems to have eroded and broken. Any hints about the best way to do that ?

Thanks again.

I forget what (if anything) holds the throttle plate on so perhaps it is removed just by prying. You may get a hint by buying a new one and inspecting it. To remove the stop switch you need to trace the wires coming from it. There are 2 wires and they go into a rubber plug. Each wire has a pin or socket on its end. Pull the rubber plug apart and then use some sort of tool (there are special tools for this) to push/pull the pin and socket from the rubber plug. (When you install the new switch make sure the pin and socket go into the correct holes on the plug.)The most difficult part of installing the new stop switch may be threading the wires through the motor handle to the motor. They may pass through a gromet of sorts. Lube the helix and its parts with white lithium grease and put everything together (it just sort of sticks together with the grease). Then slip the rubber grip/handle over the helixes until the helix tabs pop into the holes in the grip. Then lightly pull and turn the end of the stopswitch counterclockwise until it is threaded into the grip. You usually thread it in all the way and how far you thread it in affects the idle adjustment.

Thanks much for your help. It sounds like a repair job that I should be able to do. I've ordered the parts (throttle plate and stopswitch) and, when they get here, I'll give it a try.

Thanks again ! You've been a great help.
