I've owned this boat for three years. 1988 100 HP Mercury Outboard Sea Ray Seville 16' ROB 1530 lbs dry weight plus 20 gallons of gas, 2 coolers, 4 people, life jackets, skis, rope, and whatever so about 2300 to 2500 lbs, I would guess.

When I launched the boat Saturday, I started the engine as normal and noticed that the idle was above 2000 rpm. The engine didn't sound abnormally revving. So I pulled away from the trailer and made some runs and the Tachometer still seem to read high. Anyway, I ran the boat. Normally with my 15 pitch prop and the boat fully loaded max speed is 32 mph by GPS at 4950 RPM. This was the same as always but the Tachometer read 6000 :'(. I thought I had spun the prop but it checked fine d:).

Anyway, we cruised at under 4000 RPM by the Tachometer and the boat sat for 3 or 4 hours during our swim and picnic 8).

Then we started to go back and all was back to normal Tachometer readings were 4950 at 32 mph.

What is up?

Is this a sign of a pending problem?

Also, does this sound slow for this boat?
