i'm considering buying a boat that sank in its slip. The boat has twin 175's (i was told they were 1993's) i was wondering can they be saved? i spoke with one shop the guy told me 4500 each and he'll put new short blocks in each of them.Is that a good price? should i just buy a pair of decent used motors and save the trouble? I'm not in a rush to put her back in the water, what do you think is best?

thanks for the help

Salt or freshwater?

You could probably find a pair of motors that have not been underwater for just a bit more. But if the shop will guarantee the motor at the 4500 rebuild, then if freshwater dunked, might be allright. You would want everything thoroughly gone through.

When the hurricanes devistated the gulf coast there were a lot of engines for sale.

Chatter on here said that once sunk, everything becomes a ticking time bomb just waiting for time to fail. Have to agree with some of that.

Anything not sealed is questionable.

And yes, starting with rebuilt powerheads certainly helps.

But, if the price is right, you might choose to gamble with a problem here and there.....if they occur.

Good luck,

Mark
