Broken Bolt in Thermostat

I have a 1989 Evinrude 150XP that I recentlly aquired and I am starting all of the general maintanence that you should do when getting an older outboard.

While removing the thermostat cover (only to discover no thermostats) I broke a bolt off. It is below the service.

How do I go about getting this out? Can I apply heat? Goto sears and get some kind of bolt extraction device? Will a service department remove it for a reasonable price?

Thanks,
Jason

Re: Broken Bolt in Thermostat

There are many types of tools on the market for bolt extraction. Common name is EZ Outs. What you do is center punch the bolt stub, drill a hole in it (the correct size for the EZ Out), put the tool in the hole and turn counter clockwise. If the stub is not very corroded in, it may come out. Heat can be applied to the area around the stub to help.

Soaking the stub with a penetrant like PB Blaster also helps.

Last resort is drilling the hole out and putting a helix coil in it.
