I to have a problem with no firing on my 55. a person has told me to hook up a external coil with a condenser, thus giving me lots of spark, but i am wondering why this might work if you are by passing the amplifier assembly. has anyone ever tried this, if so how well did it work? also how do you set up the timing from scratch? any help would be nice.

Re: 1969 55hp johnson ignition fireing

first and mostly , pick up a manual on the outboard.
It would also help to know what type of system your working with. Right around that period omc omc was coming out with breaker-less breakerless ignition system.
breaker-less it's breaker-less could be as simple as a blown fuse, or a neutral safety nuetral saftey switch.
first-- your frist order to fixing the engine is buying a shop repair book for the engine.
