Default 1985 Evinrude Foot Control Cable Snapped

My streering cable recently snapped at the pivot block in the foot control of my 1985 Evinrude bowmount trolling motor. I can't seem to figure out how to disconnect the cable from the head of the motor so I can attempt a repair or replace the cable. I may just buy a new motor, but this one has worked great for me. The cheapest replacement cable I can find is ~$65-80 and for that you can get a ways to a new one on fall sale. Thanks for any ideas on how to handle my problem, I'm starting to get the jitters from fishing withdrawl .

Nick

Sorry if this is a duplicate it didn;t seem to post so this is try #2

a picture?

mikesreelrepair.com has motorguide and minnkota schematics, sorry no omc, but the mechanicals might be similar enough to get an idea or two.

good luck.

You can get exploded diagrams of you motor at trollingmotorparts.com If you remove the cover on the head of the unit you will see a pie shaped rack that engages the pinion gear it will lift out and you cable end is attached to it. I have not had to replace mine but it looks like the cable just screws into the rack. Hope this helps.

Talking Re: 1985 Evinrude Foot Control Cable Snapped

As stated in the other post , just lift the pie shaped plate off, remove the screw, Then theres a set screw in the housing next to where the cable comes in , loosen it and pull it out. I broke mine yesterday and semi took it apart to see where it broke. got to check on getting a new one before I completely dissassemble so I'll remember how it go's together , there is a e- clip down on the foot control you have to take off ( Note if yours is screwed to the deck like mine you have to take it up to get it loose). but it looks fairly simple. good luck and I hope this helps.
