He just wants to tow the boat but canÂ’t get the engine to trim up. You know, so it doesnÂ’t scrape the ground every time the trailer hits a bump. I think when he says "engine seized" he means the hydraulic pump motor.
There should be a knob on the side of the T/T pump. Turn that full right to release the reverse lock valve.

when i first got my boat i did not know that you had to push both trim buttons at the same time to raise the motor up . i read the instructions and felt like a dumb butt. also when towing get a trim tilt bar prop it up when towing .
The T/T is a seperate mechinism form the engine, so it just may need fluid if the battery works.

wait a minute.... at the risk of sounding real stupid... i have a mercury 1150 with the mobile tilt pump in the boat. the throttle lever has 2 buttons on the side for tilt/trim. a red b utton above a black button. i assumed the black button to lower and red button to raise.
Am i wrong?
it sounds like one of the previous posts was saying that to raise i have to push both the black and red button!?
besides this, my pump isn't working when i push the black button on it's own anyway... it just clicks.
Bexi, Merc had a three button system for a lot of years. Push the center fror trim up, center and top together for tilt up, and bottom button for down. This was replaced with a toggle switch for trim up or down and a seperate square trailer button for tilt up.
There is no telling the function of your system, since it appears to be different from these two.
BTW if the solenoid clicks when you push the button, it is trying to send current to the trim/tilt motor. It sounds like you have an electrical problem.
That 1988 motor will have the integral power trim unit between the transom brackets, instead of the earlier boat mounted style. Also, being a 1988 model it should have the thumb style trim button on the controls.
If the trim motor is siezed.... look on the lower right side of the transom bracket and you should see a hex shaped knob. That is the release screw to bypass the hydraulics and can be turned counter clockwise CCW to release the trim system. Raise the motor by hand (lift it) then tighten that knob clockwise CW again. Don't forget to use the support lever ('stay' as you called it) to rest the motor on. Even better, get a transom save bracket that holds up the lower unit while towing.
It's a 2006 thread, I would bet he has already done something with it.

sorry guys didn't realise it was an old thread.
i've started a new one now.
i have pretty much fixed the sytem now. trim up button doesn't work but i can push the 'trailer' b utton which trims up so that's fine.
