Default 1973 Evinrude 25 (Upper Crankshaft Oil Seal) &

Just wondering if it is a big project to change the upper crankshaft oil seal. I also have a suzuki and its not much trouble. Just a matter of removing flywheel, stator assembly and a plate that has the seal in it. Noticed on this motor it doesnt look so easy. Thanks Alot

OMC made a seal puller that you could thread into the seal an pull it out. Picture a tapered piece of pipe that was threaded. You would thread this into the old seal over the crankshaft and pull it out like a wine cork.

In the absence of the puller, use this technique I learnt from OBJ. Drill a couple holes in the metal part of the seal, and thread in a pair of small sheet metal screws almost all the way. Then use the screws to pry the old seal out using a slot screwdriver.

Either way is far easier than disassembling the engine.

Thanks Alot, That sounds like a plan. I'll give it a shot and your right, it has to be easier than spliting the crank case.

Keep in mind that if you pry on the magneto bearing boss that surround's that bearing, and seal, and is only about 1/8" thick, if you break it, you are looking at an entire engine block. If it is not leaking, leave it alone, or take it to a dealer. I have seen more than one of them broke off with a make shift attempt.
