Folks,

I am running a Suzuki 140 2006, with a 17, just finished the break in and trying to run WOT.

I have an 18' semi-v hull
Whole Project: http://www.granvilletech.com/Default.aspx?tabid=53
That I just finished rebuilding, I am trying to get advice on the prob size. At WOT I am turning about 5800, and getting 39mph.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Are these numbers good, or should I see better speed at WOT.

Thanks in advance.

Peace.

5800-6000 is good and 39 don't sound bad for a 17P on the 115. Is the 39 GPS speed?

Walleyehed,

Thank you. Motor is a 140, did you mean that or 115(in your post)? 39 was the GPS speed. Thank you again. Please advise.

Peace.

Wow!!! don't know where I got the 115 from????
Boat must be a bit heavy...I would have guessed at a 19P or more on the 140 on an 18ft'r of that type...
Are you using a Suzuki prop?

Re: Suzuki 140 2006 17 pitch

Walleye,

Thank you, prop was given to me (free was a good price based on my budget), it is a Suzuki, I was thinking bigger than 17 just didn't know.

Mechanic was telling me he has a 20 Stainless. I will definately try a bigger prop and see what I get.

Boat may be a little heavy, don't know the weight, also have a slight list to port on plane.

Still getting things trimmed out, when the motor is pulled all the way in, the cavitation plate is 1" below transom, I like it that way, gulf can get a little rough at times. When trimmed back 1/2 way cavitation plate is even with bottom of hull.

Thank you much, will be looking at alternate props. I have an opportunity to purchase 20 stainless for $150, what do you think? Was used on a demo boat and is un damaged.

BTW: If you are looking at Florida, stop by, I live on St. Joseph sound north of St. Pete. Actually, I live across the street from the canal, neighbor lets me use davits and dock, 5 min idle to the channel, then mexico:)

Peace.

8) So Ed are you looking for top speed or stability, seeing you have a outboard you have a lot of option's as to prop type's and all the thing's that can be acclompished,

Sure look's like you have a deep v there and you like it trimmed in? (stablity in a heavy chop?) Maybe you need a overall lifter or stern lift prop.........8) Better let the pro's make a recomedation there, maybe a turbo ULTIMA 4 or TURBO 2+2 20 pitch.

Tail Gunner, et al.

I am really looking more for stability (saftey) than speed.

I was out today with a pretty stiff wind and kept everything trimmed in and ran fine. When you get between the islands there can be some serious rollers, I like the prop in the water :)

With the V I am handling the chop very well, when on plane I can trim out a little ways get more RPMS and get the bow down where I like it.

So bottom line, stability and max performance, not squirly speed :)

Peace.

Re: Suzuki 140 2006 17 pitch

If we go to a 20SS, that will be like a 21P aluminum, and likely put us in the 5000+/-100 area...a no-no for that engine..
BTW, a 2+2 has alot of bow-lift...I don't think that's the direction we want to go..
What I "Really" don't understand (and yet, I do????)
is why would a Mechanic tell you to try a 20P SS if a 17P is not even getting to the top of the RPM range...???

EDIT: This engines Max RPM range is 5600-6200.
I also found some test data on this engine on several boats...in one test on a 19-1/2ft Deep-V fiberglass, they ran a 20P SS at 6000RPM and 44.2mph at a weight of over 2700lbs...
That engine should have hit the rev-limiter with a 17 on your rig. This engine has a 2.38:1 gear ratio and "should" swing a much higher pitch prop.
Did you put a new suzuki tach in when you installed the engine???

Re: Suzuki 140 2006 17 pitch

Walleyehed,

All guages are new and Suzuki. Motor was rigged by authorized Suzuki mechanic, maybe throttle cables need to be adjusted? He did say I would hit the rev limiter, but that has not been my experience.

I think at this stage I might want to get him back to tweek the installation. I may want to bring it back to the lake for some smoother water to run a few tests.

Any further thoughts?

Please advise.

The 17P suzuki prop is what one of my customers is running on a Johnson (suzuki) 140 on a 26ft pontoon...so I am sure something isn't right...
