how to know if accel pump is working right?

can someone tell how to know if the accel pump is working or working right. thanks for any info.

Have someone else push the throttle down while you listen to the carb. (engine OFF). You can easily hear it squirt if it's working. Then, you can remove the flame arrestor and look in to see the gas being squirted. If it's working correctly, there should be no lag between idle and throttling up, although lag can also be caused by secondary plates that are improperly set. What leads you to believe the pump is problematic?

where are the secondary plates?when i idle the motor and give it throttle sounds like poping sounds in side the carb.

a lot depends on what carb you have. If its a 2 barrel then you don't have secondaries. Secondaries are on a 4 barrel carb.
when you push the throttle from idle to wide open, the accelerator pump is supposes to shoot a certain amount of fuel. Depending on the carb, it can be anywhere from 10-50 cc's which is only 2 ounces or less. Not practical to measure it, if you see a healthy directed squirt of raw fuel from the pump nozzle then it's fine. If the squirt is flaired out the nozzle or has a spray then you either have blockage in the passagway or nozzle that needs to be cleaned out, or the accel pump mechanism needs some work. If the motor is popping when reving it in neutral then it is not the accelerator pump.

are there suposed to be a steady stream of gas squirting or a flaired out if you have rpms at 1000?
