Probably a dumb question.... but...Why don't Suzuki 2 strokes use air filters? When I did a recent carb stripdown and cleanup on my 85 DT40 I found a fair bit of dried salt in there. Without a filter it can also suck in any bits of crud, rust, dust that might find its way inside the engine cover.

Re: Air Filters

cause a well maintaned rig wont have crud under the hood.
ya gotta wash it now and again.
but for the most part its no worries.
one day I will take pics of my commercial buddies motor I rebuilt in 98. its run 1300 gallons of gas since 98 to spring 05 and has had mostly 0 maint.
if it starts it runs.
compression as of may 06 was perfect.

Re: Air Filters

You don't need airfilters on outboards because there is no dirt or dust flying around that the motor can suck up. The motor cowling usually blocks anything bad (water, salt, bird crap, etc.) from getting into your motor. As rodbolt said, you got to wash it too!

Re: Air Filters

Maybe there isn't any dust or dirt where you are, but there is plenty of dust and dirt at times around the rivers and lakes out West. As rodbolt says, at least keep your engine clean under the hood:love:
