Default Mercury 115 1974 Lower unit Jammed in reverse

The Other day comming into the dock i shifted into reverse to avoid bumping another boater pulling out .I was sucessfull . But my shifter jammed . It racheted the lower end did kind a lot .Then a clunk. I took the lower unit off . The shift shaft dont move . Either way ..I am Going to attempt the lower end rebuild . Its not apart yet . I got a list of parts gathered I suspect that I broke that clutch .I better just rip it down and see what happened . New seals bearings and clutch parts seem to be availble . i sure hope the gears are all good any suggestions . I read the manual and see what is ahead .. I see that the basic parts list out to 250 bucks with shipping . lots of pressing off bearings . Has anyone attempted this with out all the special tools ???

I have resealed the LU on my 1984 115 I6 without special tools, it was not very easy but it is possible to do. I also replaced all the gears with parts from a spare LU. I did not have to remove the bearings though. The biggest problem was to get the bearing carrier assembly out. I used a set of wooden chisels to get it out.

I got it apart I ordered a whole mess of parts i needed .I am now doing each segment . I did the whole upper power head this spring and wow is all i got to say .until i jammed the lower unit which i did not rebuild thinking it was good . turns out that my pinion nut backed out . "it did not fall off got it in time" the shift cam and rods are wasted.the cam follower clutch and gears both knicked up . the parts are comming 250 bucks for seals and bearings .150 bucks for shifter linkage parts .. I am doing the press work and those bearings are all shot so far .i am making tools and cutting off stuff left and right .this 32 year old motor .is a challange But I will win the war . I think since I went this far I will replace the gears . with new ones allthough the old ones are not that bad .
