I have a1983 Bayliner Capri with Volvo AQ125 engine and 270 stern drive. At times when on idle the voltmeter will swing rapidly from one extreme to the other for a minute or two, also under power it will sometimes peg to + side for several minutes or until I change speed. Had serviced at dealer and all they said was alternator was OK. Also will stall when given gas quickly from idle even when it is warmed up otherwise runs well. Don't expect help from dealer and most of the local Volvo repair shops will not work on a boat this old.

why not try bumping this question up to the Mercruiser, volvo, omc engine problem part of the forum? there are several guys there who really know this motor/drive set up and you might get your answer.
