70 hp Johnson, what year

I just bought this engine hanging on a pontoon boat and don't know the year.
model is J70THESB amd serial number is G02521743
Any help here will be appreciated Thank you

The year is 1990.

Spark Plug is Champion QL77JC4 set at .030.

VRO (OMS) pump still connected?

J - Johnson
70 - 70hp
T - Electric start and Trim and Tilt
H - Less intergral tank and Hydraulic steering
E - 9
S - 0
B - model run number.....not important.

So you motor is a 1990 model

Thank you for the fast come back and now I know what manual to buy.
No the VRO is disconnected and will have to see if it would be best to get it all reconnected and working. A manual will help. Again Thanks.

Get the OEM manual Earnest. It will give you specific info on your engine and tell you how to check the VRO and make sure it's working.

I used to have a good link to an article about VRO pumps...seems to have diappeared....:'(

Hi there
I have recently bought a boat from soon to be father in law and brought it back into Australia.
I am a bit nervous in getting parts for servicing the motor etc and a good place to start would be the year of the motor I hope.
It's a Johnson 70hp model : 70e176e.
Can you help with identifying the year!
