someone pleas help me on this, i have a 55hp motor and i had it running fine with muffs on it today, took it down to the river and it wont start, fired a couple of times but didnt run, what can cause this does anyone have any ideas for me please help..
klwright, you'll have to turn on "Receive PM" in My User Area->Edit Profile if you wish to communicate by PM. Not that I can be much help.
But my first guess given your symptoms would be to suspect one or more cylinders are not producing any power. A simple cylinder drop test, which can be done on muffs, should confirm it.
With the engine running, pull each spark plug lead one at a time, using insulated spark plug boot pliers. Note the change in the engine. Cylinders not producing power will cause no change, while the one that is will likely cause the outboard to stall immediately. Once you've found the failing cylinder, test spark, compression, fuel delivery, etc, on that cylinder.
It would have nothing to do with the water pump unless the engine was overheating, which takes at least 30 seconds.
The only worthwhile clue you gave is that it ran alst year but not now. Am I reading that right? If that's the case:
Remove the air silencer off the front of the carbs and remove the hex head plug at the bottom of each carburetor. Look at the inner end of that plug. Is it clean or is it covered with varnish or goo or green stuff? Anything other than squeaky clean means the carb has stale gas gum in it and needs to be cleaned. Pay special attention to the orfice plug down in the hole behind those plugs. You need a special screwdriver to get them out. OR soak them in the kind of carburetor cleaner that has a dip basket in a gallon can for a couple of hours and then wash them out with water and blow out with compressed air. Use all new gaskets to reassemble. Did you say you have a manual? It's almost needed to get all the linkages correct if you don't know what you are doing. At least don't mess with any adjustments that you don't have to disturb.
