new stator, 1988 70hp

It looks like its time to replace the stator. I get no continuity between the red and blue wires. Before I start buying some expensive parts I have a couple questions for the "Mercury Wizards" here at I Boats.

Does changing to the new 16 amp stator kit require any other modifications (My engine has the trianglr type rectifier and no voltage regulator)

Is it worth the extra money to replace the trigger while I have the flywheel off?

Any other words of wisdom related to this engine are always appreciated.

thanks

You test between the red and ground and the blue and ground to test the stator and if you replace the stator with a 16 amp you will need a voltage regulater

Thanks for the info, I was working from photocopies of a service manual, I will check again now that I have my full manuals available.

I checked my Mercury manual and it says to test resistance between red and blue wires (low speed) and red wire and ground (high speed) I get around 112 ohms from red to ground but red to blue shows open circut.

Disconnect blue. Check. blue to ground. Should be 5800 - 7000 Ohms. Disconnect red. Check red to ground, should be 2000 - 2400 Ohms.

I defer to experience, tested either way blue to ground reads open so I guess it's time to shop for a stator. Thanks for your help!

will the 16 amp stator work with the magnets on that flywheel?

I still haven't' gotten the flywheel off to see which stator the motor actually has, but the absence of a voltage regulator would make me believe it is the 9 amp. Mercury lists the 16 amp as the replacement for that motor, it is listed as a part number change.

Any ideas regarding the correct replacement and best place to shop would be appreciated. Motor serial OB261098# is OB261098
