Re: control problem

That shift rod has a gooseneck bend at the top right??
You probably have the bend towards the rear. It must be forward or it binds up the shift linkage

not sure whatyou mean by gooseneck the connector at the top of the shift rod is about 5/8 dia machined down to about a 1/4 flat on 1 side.that all moves freely with the cables unhooked but the control box is still locked up .is the a special way to orient the control box during assy.it sure seems stiff to shift theres some wear on the detent ball area.dont see anything broke or missing

Re: control problem

Okay, yours is an older style. I wasn't sure what year it changed.
In your control box the control lever moves a nylon gear with only 3 teeth. That gear must be syncronized with the cam that it meshes with. Once you open the control box you will see what I'm talking about. Yours is probably jumped one tooth and out of sync.

Re: control problem

Not the detent ball. I believe he's talking about the 3 tooth , kind of like a partial gear .

It has to be aligned correctly , where they mesh.

I doubt the detent ball ,even if frozen.

Would make it as hard to shift as you describe.

Re: control problem

Just did all of what you are talking about wth a '75' Johnson-50.

The control box is a nightmare, for the novice. But, when you settle down, and LOOK at it, it's really simple.

1. There is a nuetral safety switch, in the front-true.

2. The "three fingers" must be aligned with the three on the control bellcrank.

3. The easist way to get the nuetral "ball" into place is to remove the spring cover and then place the ball and spring. Then replace the cover and tighten.

The whole trick is to finish the inside stuff-FIRST and build-out..

By doing this you satisfy the nuetral safety switch and the are ready to "place" the nuetral ball/spring.

4. After that, just place the outside cover on, making sure the throttle cable stop is in the slot-in the control cover.

Ther is NO simple way to describe it. But, it is SIMPLE to anyone that will look at it for awhile..

djohns19,

You said it , sometimes there's no good way ,to explain in words, how to do something.

I remember , the first few times I fooled with one .

If you don't assemble ,exactly in the order you take apart.

You'll end up starting over. LOL

Really is simple, once you get into it.
