Yesterday a boat came across the lake seemingly without looking. I and another boater had to very quickly stop our boats to avoid an accident. Unfortunately, putting my engine in neutral was not enough. After putting it in neutral I was still drifting forward so I quickly put it in reverse. This happened very quickly and I had a lot on my mind, but I think I heard a pop like something broke. After that my tilt trim/ was not working properly. I think the term trim refers to the adjustments I make while underway and tilt is used when I raise the prop out of the water and when I am trailering my boat. (is this right?) I can hear the motor work and the engine will trim slightly, very slowly, but does not stay raised. It goes back down in a few seconds. It will not allow me to tilt the motor in the raised position for trailering. My questions are: What do you think broke? Should I expect this to happen if I shift from forward to reverse to quickly or at to high a speed? How complicated of a repair might this be? I can make simple strait forward repairs, but if it gets complicated I can do more damage than good.
