87 omc 5.7heard something ticking, I want to pull the rocker cover off but the riser (name??) sits on the exhaust manifold looks to be in the way, if I take it off, can I use high heat silicone to seal it up? ot should I just take the whole manifold off?

Re: want to check rockers

Take the manifold and riser off as an assembly.

You cannot use sealer between the riser and the manifold.

How was your oil pressure?

it was flickering, but I think it was just the gauge, at some points it stays at 0 and doesnt move then shoots right up to 40psi, comes and goes with the waves

Valve noise is usually the first sign of low or no oil pressure. I would recommend installing a mechanical oil pressure guage to the engine and see what the pressure reads.

Did you check the oil level?

half way up on the dipstick when that happened,

There is your problem, the oil is over filled. This allows the crankshaft to hit the oil and areate the oil. The air bubbles get in the lifters and and won't hold pressure and they tick. The oil pressure fluctuates also because of the air.
Drain the oil down to the full mark and see what happens.
The other question is why is it too full?

sorry, I meant half way up between the two marks on the dipstick. and it only sounds like one lifter, but ticking pretty loud though.

it's what it sounds like, but still want to verify before trailering the boat home to work on it. would an automotive lifter survive the marine enviroment / use?
