%#&@ing Rochester Check Ball! What am I doing wrong?

Inside of the pump housing there are two holes--a shallow one and a deep one. I know the check ball goes in the deeper one, but it bounces out of the hole when I shake the carb, and ends up in the shallow hole. Questions:

Is the pump return spring supposed to be of a small enough diameter that it fits into the very bottom of the pump housing where the diameter gets smaller?

Am I supposed to be using the aluminum ball?

Am I crazy to assume that if I put the ball and spring in place, the ball should stay in place if even I turn the pump upside down?

I feel like a kid playing with one of those little games where you put the b.b. in the clown's eyes, only if I do it wrong, I have to row home!

Spring should fit all the way down and hold the ball in place. Wrong hole and it won't pump. Check it with fuel in the bowl before you leave.....

Should be a steel ball not aluminum.

Are you certain about that? Seloc says there's a steel ball in the venturi cluster under a long spring, and an aluminum ball in the accelerator pump. Seloc has also been known to be wrong. . .

Looked for the thread and couldn't find it. Could you link to it? I'd love to hear that someone else once struggled through the same thing.

Oh well. I've got bigger fish to fry now. Rebuilt both carbs, and either both of them have the exact same thing wrong with them, or the problem isn't in the carbs. They both have a tendency to barf out flame, which leads me to the conclusion that there's a problem with timing, spark, or something else electrical. Time to replace the 35-year-old Dist. cap, wires, rotor and coil as well as the points and condenser.
